Villa Oeiras D.O.P. Carcavelos Superior 15 Years (also labelled as Villa Oeiras Carcavelos 15 Anos Superior or 15-Year Old Superior) is the flagship Portuguese fortified sweet white wine (vinho generoso branco) from the Carcavelos DOP appellation, located west of Lisbon near the Tagus River estuary and the Atlantic Ocean. It is produced by Villa Oeiras, the only active producer reviving this historic and tiny appellation. The estate is situated on the former property of the Marquis of Pombal (Casal da Manteiga) in Oeiras.

Grape Varieties

Traditional white blend, approximately:

  • Galego Dourado — 33%
  • Arinto — 33%
  • Ratinho — 34%

The grapes come from old vines (derived from historic cuttings over 300 years old from the Pombal era) planted on calcareous limestone soils, just 200 meters from the Tagus estuary. The strong Atlantic influence provides freshness, subtle salinity, and a distinctive maritime character.

Production and Ageing

This is a fortified wine: fermentation is stopped midway by adding grape spirit (aguardente at 77%, usually from the Lourinhã region). It then ages for an average of 15 years (the “Superior” designation indicates the longest and most complex ageing in the range) in a combination of Portuguese oak (Nacional), French oak, and sometimes chestnut barrels. The wine develops an oxidative style with rancio characteristics while retaining vibrant freshness.

  • Alcohol: 19.0% vol. (typically 18.5–19%)
  • Residual sugar: Around 100 g/L (medium-sweet to sweet, perfectly balanced by acidity)
  • Bottle sizes: Commonly 0.5 L (500 ml) or 0.375 L (37.5 cl).

Tasting Notes (Typical NV Profile)

  • Appearance: Deep golden-amber to amber-orange, luminous with sometimes a greenish glint.
  • Aroma: Complex and heady, with pronounced maritime notes (sea smoke, salinity), candied orange peel, bitter orange, dried sultana, apricot, roasted hazelnut, toffee, honey, spices, caramel, and subtle rancio/oxidative character. The long barrel ageing adds depth without overpowering the fruit.
  • Palate: Velvety and concentrated yet elegant and fresh. Layers of dried citrus, candied lemon, dried apricot, nuts, caramel, toffee, and sweet spices. Excellent balancing acidity keeps it lively and prevents cloying sweetness; the finish is long, resonant, energetic, and clean, with a beautiful texture and lingering saline freshness. It is more complex, oxidative, and refined than the 7- or 12-year versions, showing greater concentration and integration while maintaining the signature Atlantic vibrancy. Critics often compare it to a fresher, lighter style of Bual Madeira or a high-quality oxidative white Port, with unique caramel-almond nuances typical of Carcavelos.

Food Pairing Suggestions

Excellent as an aperitif, digestif, or with desserts. Ideal pairings include:

  • Portuguese conventual sweets, almond tarts, citrus-based desserts, or chocolate desserts (especially >75% cocoa)
  • Hard or semi-cured cheeses, blue cheeses
  • Pâtés or foie gras
  • Nuts

Serve slightly chilled at 10–12°C. Once opened, it keeps well for several months.

Awards and Value

  • Wine Enthusiast: 94 points (Editors’ Choice)
  • Frequently awarded gold medals and high scores in Portuguese and international competitions.
  • Praised for its elegance, balance, historical authenticity, and role in preserving the Carcavelos tradition.

Additional Notes

Carcavelos is one of Portugal’s oldest appellations and one of the four classic vinhos generosos (together with Port, Madeira, and Moscatel de Setúbal). The Superior 15 Years is the benchmark and top expression in the Villa Oeiras range — more evolved and complex than the 7 or 12 Anos versions. While the producer also makes limited red (tinto) Carcavelos wines (mainly from Castelão and Trincadeira), the Superior 15 Anos is the classic white blend. Occasional Colheita (single-vintage) releases appear when quality and quantity allow.
