Cabeça de Toiro D.O.C. Tejo Reserva (English: Cabeça de Toiro Tejo DOC Reserva) is a Portuguese red wine from the Tejo wine region (formerly known as Ribatejo), located just east of Lisbon. The name “Cabeça de Toiro” translates to “Head of the Bull” in English.

Producer and Origin

  • Producer: Primarily associated with Caves Velhas (part of Enoport Wines / Cavipor group), from the Quinta de São João Batista estate in Brogueiro, Torres Novas, Tejo region.
  • Classification: Tejo DOC (Denominação de Origem Controlada) Reserva.
  • Vintage examples: Commonly available in 2016–2021 vintages (e.g., 2018, 2019, 2020), with characteristics consistent across recent years.

Grape Varieties

It is typically a blend of:

  • Castelão (also known as João de Santarém) – indigenous Portuguese variety,
  • Touriga Nacional – iconic Portuguese grape,
  • Syrah – international variety adding structure and spice.

Typical proportions in many vintages: approx. 34% Syrah, 33% Castelão, 33% Touriga Nacional. Some special editions may be 100% Touriga Nacional.

Winemaking and Ageing

The wine undergoes ageing for 9 months in French oak barrels, which adds complexity, spice, and subtle toasty notes while keeping residual sugar very low (< 5 g/L, making it dry). Alcohol content is usually around 13–13.5%.

Tasting Notes (Typical Profile)

  • Appearance: Defined garnet colour, sometimes with violet hues; medium to full-bodied.
  • Aroma: Intense and aromatic – black fruits (blackberry, black plum, blueberry, cherry), dark spice, pepper, leather, allspice, espresso, sweet tobacco, and toasty oak notes.
  • Palate: Vigorous, luscious, and harmonious. Layers of ripe black fruits, firm but balanced tannins, good acidity, spicy and peppery wood influences. It feels rich and solid with a juicy, fruit-forward finish and savoury/herbal undertones.
  • Style: Bold yet balanced, full-bodied red with structure that allows some ageing potential while being approachable when young. Critics often describe it as spicy, oaky, and well-integrated.

Food Pairing Suggestions

Excellent with grilled meats, barbecues, roasted red meats, mature cheeses, game, or tomato-based dishes. It pairs well with hearty Portuguese cuisine.

Ratings and Value

  • Frequently scores 90–91 points from critics (e.g., Wine Enthusiast).
