Villa Oeiras D.O.P. Carcavelos 12 Years Red (also labelled as Villa Oeiras Carcavelos 12 Anos Tinto or 12 Anos Vinho Generoso Tinto) is a rare Portuguese fortified sweet red wine (vinho generoso tinto) from the Carcavelos DOP appellation, located west of Lisbon near the Tagus River estuary and the Atlantic Ocean. It is produced by Villa Oeiras, the only active producer in this historic and tiny appellation. The estate is situated on the former property of the Marquis of Pombal (Casal da Manteiga) in Oeiras.

Grape Varieties

Made from traditional red varieties:

  • Castelão
  • Trincadeira

These grapes are grown on calcareous (limestone-rich) soils just 200 meters from the Tagus estuary. The Atlantic influence provides freshness and a subtle saline character. The vines derive from historic plant material on the Pombal estate.

Production and Ageing

This is a fortified wine: fermentation is stopped by adding grape spirit (aguardente at 77%, often from the Lourinhã region). It then ages for an average of 12 years in a combination of Portuguese and French oak barrels.

  • Alcohol: 18.5–19% vol. (e.g., 18.9% in recent analyses)
  • Style: Sweet fortified red with high residual sugar balanced by acidity and oxidative character.
  • Bottle sizes: Typically 0.375 L (37.5 cl) or 0.5 L.

Tasting Notes (Typical Profile)

  • Appearance: Amber-orange to deep tawny-orange hue (oxidative style, not bright ruby red).
  • Aroma: Complex and intense, with notes of macerated red fruits, dried fig, sweet spices, chocolate, coffee, fine wood, caramel, toasted nuts, and subtle balsamic or oxidative nuances. The long barrel ageing integrates wood aromas beautifully with dried fruit.
  • Palate: Velvety and concentrated yet elegant. Layers of dried red fruits, fig, caramel, almond, chocolate, and spices. Good structure, vibrant acidity that keeps it fresh despite the sweetness, and a long, harmonious finish with a touch of salinity. It offers a fine caramel-almond character unique to Carcavelos, with balance between sweetness, spirit, and oak. Critics describe it as reminiscent of a sweet Madeira or Tawny Port but with extra fruitiness and a drier, more vibrant tone on the palate.

Compared to the white versions (7/12/15 Anos), the red is more oxidative and nutty, with deeper dried-fruit and chocolate notes, while retaining the signature Atlantic freshness.

Food Pairing Suggestions

Excellent as an aperitif, digestif, or with desserts. Ideal pairings include:

  • Portuguese conventual sweets, almond cakes, chocolate-based desserts, or dried fruit tarts
  • Hard cheeses, blue cheeses, or nutty cheeses
  • Foie gras or pâtés
  • Nuts

Serve slightly chilled at 10–14°C.

Awards and Value

This red expression is highly praised for reviving the rare red Carcavelos style. Recent tastings have awarded it scores such as 94 points. It is considered a premium, small-production wine with strong historical and qualitative value.

Additional Notes

Carcavelos is one of Portugal’s oldest appellations and one of the four classic vinhos generosos (alongside Port, Madeira, and Moscatel de Setúbal). While the majority of Villa Oeiras production is white (from Arinto, Galego Dourado, and Ratinho), the red (tinto) versions from Castelão and Trincadeira are much rarer and highly sought after. The 12 Anos Tinto is a newer or limited release compared to the more established white blends. There are also 10-year Tinto expressions and occasional Colheita (single-vintage) reds.
